Pilgrimage to St. Nicholas the New Vuneni

Pilgrimage to St. Nicholas the New Vuneni

In the north-east of Greece, in Thessaly, an hour's drive from the famous Meteora, there is a small village of Vouneni, next to which is a monastery and the place of martyrdom of St. Nicholas the New, widely revered in Greece.

The monastery church, which contains a particle of the holy saint's relics, is surrounded by a grove of deciduous trees, on one of which the holy martyr Nicholas the New was martyred. The church also contains the tomb of Saint Nicholas.

A miracle has been happening in the grove for centuries, the likes of which are not found anywhere on earth. A blood-like fluid flows abundantly from the trees, its chemical composition practically identical to human blood.

According to official research in a chemical laboratory, this liquid contains all the components of human blood, except for the blood group and substances responsible for coagulation.

From the anointing of this miraculous liquid, countless miracles and healings have occurred and continue to occur, from ancient times to the present day.
The grove of St. Nicholas still exists. In the grove are the remains of the tree near which, according to legend, the saint was tortured, and from another tree a blood-like fluid oozes all year round. Every year on the day of remembrance of his martyrdom (May 9), divine services are held in the church, and thousands of believers come to the holiday.

Believers have long noticed that one tree “bleeds” and a hole was made in the tree, into which believers, with prayer and trust in the Lord, insert a tube, and if it is the will of the saint, liquid flows out of the tube, which is reverently collected by believers.

Description of the excursion. Early in the morning - departure by ferry from the port of Corfu to Igoumenitsa. Then - transfer to Vouni, about 3.5 hours. On the way - stops at a cafe. Upon arrival in Vouni, in the monastery of St. Nicholas the New, we visit the chapel of the saint, the temple in which the tomb and a part of the relics of St. Nicholas are located.

We will be met by the only inhabitant of the monastery, Abbot Timofey. Then we can serve an akathist at the "bleeding" tree. With God's help, we can collect blood, if that is the will of the Saint. Then - lunch in the nearest settlement and return to Kerkyra.

At the guests' request, the excursion can be two days long, with an overnight stay in Kalabaka and a visit to three of the six Meteora monasteries.
