Afionas Village
Afionas is a picturesque unique village, located on a rocky ledge at an altitude of 150 m above sea level on the northwest coast of the island, 35 km from the city of Corfu. The village is built in such a way that from all points there are panoramic views of the Adriatic coast - the northern islands of Diapontia and the beach of St. George Paga "icy", which received this name due to the cold Adriatic current that often enters this bay. To come to Corfu and not visit Afionas is about the same as visiting Venice and not seeing the main canal.
Afionas is famous for one of the most beautiful sunsets in Corfu, which can be enjoyed while sitting on a bench on the observation deck at the edge of the cliff, or while enjoying drinks and traditional Corfiot cuisine on the restaurant's observation deck.
According to archaeological research, the village of Afionas was built in the 6th century BC, then destroyed and rebuilt in the 6th century AD. The path leading from the village to the historic port of Porto Timoni leads to twin canals separated by a narrow sand spit.
Afionas is the only village whose center is not built in the traditional Venetian style of Corfu, but in the typical style of the Aegean islands - white houses with blue shutters and doors. Narrow streets, romantic courtyards, old houses, arches buried in flowers will not leave wonderful memories in your soul. Afionas is a place that is definitely worth visiting if you are on holiday in Corfu! You can enjoy lunch in cozy taverns with breathtaking sea views and stunning sunsets. The taverns are located right on the terraces hanging over the rocks.
