Great Meteors
Group or individual tour.
A trip to mainland Greece to Meteora – a unique stone forest of the Thessalian plain, an ancient monastic center of the Orthodox East. For many centuries, this area has attracted thousands of ascetics like a magnet. Of the 21 monasteries that existed before, six have survived and are still functioning, two of which we can visit during our trip. You will be able to see relics and treasures, visit museums and enjoy stunning views of the stone pillars and monasteries on the tops of the rocks.
Description of the tour in a group (up to 50 people).
Our journey will start early in the morning. The bus will pick you up from your hotel/villa/apartment. Then we will head to the south of the island, to the port of Lefkimmi.
Upon arrival at the port, we will board the ferry to the mainland port of Igoumenitsa.
The ferry departs at 06:30. The ferry journey takes one hour.
Then it will take us 2 hours and 20 minutes to reach our first stop, which will be Kalambaka, a small town located at the foot of an extraordinary geological phenomenon, the giant rocks of Meteora.
During your trip to Meteora you will have the opportunity to admire the beauty of mainland Greece. Our route runs through two administrative regions of Greece, Epirus and Thessaly, along the national road Egnatia with many tunnels and high, long bridges.
Upon arrival in Kalambaka we will visit a souvenir shop where you can rest a bit, go to the toilet and see an exhibition of hand-made icons. You can also buy souvenirs from Meteora.
After our short stop, we will head to the tops of the cliffs to visit the monasteries. Currently, the Meteora monastery complex consists of six active monasteries, four male and two female. You will be able to see all six monasteries and take pictures of them with your cameras from the observation platforms. You will also have special stops for photos.
During this excursion, you will visit one male and one female monastery. You will get acquainted with the rich history and religious traditions, see magnificent Byzantine architecture, frescoes from the 14th and 16th centuries and rare icons. High towers with a wooden winch and net, which once lifted monks to the monasteries, a huge wooden barrel of 12 tons from the 16th century and much more, all this can be seen.
After visiting the two monasteries we will head to Kalambaka where we will stop for lunch at a local restaurant.
After this we will return to the port of Igoumenitsa.
There is a strict dress code for entering the Meteora monasteries.
Women will need to wear a long skirt that goes below the knees. It is not enough to cover the knees, trousers and shorts are not allowed. It is also important to cover the shoulders, this is something that the monasteries are very strict about. So wear a long skirt/dress or have a scarf ready. Also, all monasteries have skirts and shawls at the entrance that you can buy. Men should wear a long-sleeved T-shirt or shirt (not sleeveless shirts) and trousers or long shorts that go below the knees.
Entrance to each monastery costs 3 euros per person. Children under 12 do not pay for entrance to the monastery. Monasteries do not accept credit cards.
Individual excursion to Meteora.
The excursion takes place in a comfortable 7-seater, 9-seater or 12- and 16-seater car.
On an individual trip we can visit 2 or 3 monasteries.
